On 12 August 2026, a total solar eclipse sweeps down from the Arctic across Greenland, western Iceland and into northern Spain — the first total solar eclipse to reach mainland Europe since the famous event of 1999, and the first over mainland Spain since 1905. If you're anywhere in Europe, North Africa or the North Atlantic, you'll see at least a partial eclipse. The only question is how much — and that depends entirely on where you're standing.

Where is it total?

The path of totality — the narrow band where the Moon covers the Sun completely — crosses eastern Greenland, the western half of Iceland, and then a diagonal swathe of Spain from Galicia in the northwest toward the Mediterranean, ending near sunset over the Balearic Sea. Greatest eclipse falls over the North Atlantic near Iceland at about 17:46 UT (19:46 in central Europe), with a little over two minutes of totality. Everywhere outside that band sees a partial eclipse, deep near the path and shallower with distance.

A sunset eclipse — watch it safely

For much of Europe this eclipse happens low in the west, in the hour or so before sunset. That makes it dramatic, but you'll want a clear, unobstructed western horizon. And a warning that never changes: never look at the partially eclipsed Sun without certified solar filters (ISO 12312-2). Only from inside the path of totality, and only during the brief total phase, is it safe to look with the naked eye.
